The project brought together youth workers from four partner organizations across Sweden, Italy, Aruba, and Romania, with a shared mission: strengthening the quality and impact of youth work through competence development and international cooperation.

Hosted by Stichting Popcorn, the 7-day mobility gathered 12 youth workers committed to improving their practice and expanding their tools for working with young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Building Competences for Meaningful Youth Work

STEPS was designed around two key learning pillars:
• Nonformal Education (NFE) – exploring innovative, participatory methods that empower young people and foster active engagement.
• Erasmus+ as a tool for transformation – understanding how to use the Erasmus+ programme strategically to create sustainable youth initiatives and social impact.

Through interactive workshops, practical exercises, reflection sessions, and intercultural exchange, participants strengthened their competences in:
• Designing and implementing nonformal education activities
• Supporting disadvantaged youth
• Developing transnational youth projects
• Building long-term international partnerships

IDEI’s Contribution and Learning Journey

IDEI’s representatives actively contributed their experience from working with Romanian youth while also gaining new perspectives, tools, and methods to apply locally. The training created a valuable space for peer learning, collaboration, and the exchange of best practices across diverse socio-cultural contexts.

Beyond the mobility itself, the project includes a local testing phase, where IDEI will implement workshops and activities using the methods learned in Aruba. This ensures that the impact of STEPS extends far beyond the training course and reaches young people directly in our communities.

Strengthening European Cooperation in Youth Work

STEPS successfully fostered a supportive international network of youth workers dedicated to improving quality standards in youth work. By investing in professional development and collaboration, IDEI continues to strengthen its role in European youth initiatives and enhance opportunities for young people in Romania.

Participation in STEPS reflects IDEI’s ongoing commitment to:
• Lifelong learning
• Inclusion and equal opportunities
• International cooperation
• Empowering young people through quality youth work

We look forward to building on this experience and developing future Erasmus+ collaborations that create lasting, positive change for youth across Europe and beyond.

IDEI at STEPS – Strengthening Youth Work Through European Synergies in Aruba In May 2023, IDEI Romania proudly took part in the Erasmus+ training course STEPS – Structured European Synergies, held in Oranjestad, Aruba.
